Some outs will actually hurt you more than help you even if they make your hand. If you’re trying for a straight and you need a J and K, but there are two or three hearts on the board already you really don’t want the J or K of hearts turning up. Sure they make your hand but they would likely give someone the flush they’re hoping for as well. Rule out outs that will ruin your good hand.

Calculating your Odds of Success

Now that you know what your total number of outs are you can use that figure to calculate what your odds are in this online poker hand. Look at the chart below and you’ll see what your percent chance is of getting the hand you want based on your total number of outs.

The Rule of 2 and 4

If you don’t want to look to a chart all the time you can rely on the rule of 2 and 4 to give you a rough estimate instead. Simply take your number of outs and multiply it by four when you have the turn and river left, multiply it by 2 when you’re relying on the river. This is roughly your percentage of success, and it’s simple to remember in the heat of the moment.

Outs Don’t Always Mean You’ll Win

Just because you have six outs for the straight that you need doesn’t mean that you’ll win if you manage to get them. Someone else could still get a better hand than yours in the real money match.
